The following article was published in the Sydney Gazette & New South Wales Advertiser on 11 June 1835. It’s not known who this particular Charles Wishart was, or what happened to him afterwards, suffice to say, if anyone has any idea we’d love to hear from you!
On Sunday morning last, two young gentlemen newly arrived in the colony, named John Eggham and Chas. Wishart, proceeded on the road to Bondi, for the purpose of having a day’s shooting. When they arrived at the New Race Course a covey of quail started up, and took direction across Mr. Wishart, who cried out to Mr. Eggham not to fire. It was unfortunately too late; pop went Eggham’s gun; the birds escaped unhurt – but a portion of the charge took effect in Wishart’s right cheek, and most seriously injured him, so much so, that he remained for a long time insensible, and was finally carried home in a cart which was passing within hail at the time. Mr. W’s personal attractions will suffer severely by this Sunday shooting excursion.
