Wisharts in the 1851 UK Census (Excluding Ireland)

In total there were 1836 people bearing the Wishart surname enumerated in the 1851 United Kingdom census (excluding Ireland.)  Most of the following data was compiled by Scott Wishart, who spent many hours between 2002 and 2005 trawling through microfilm of census returns looking for Wisharts.  Where available, he was able to use published indexes by family history societies, and more recently, as a result of the digitisation of the records, has cross-referenced many of his findings with those published online.  In terms of an overview of the surname, the 1851 census provides a far more complete picture than the 1841 census, when many folios from Fife (a Wishart ‘stronghold’) were lost in the journey across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh.  Of course there will undoubtedly be individuals who were not enumerated at all for one reason or another, some of whom are likely to ‘appear’ ten years later in 1861.  From the database, the following statistics have been created, and please click on a county name to see a list of all Wisharts enumerated in those locations.
