GEORGE WISHART - 500 YEARS

The Wishart family over the ages has produced many interesting people.  Perhaps the most famous and influential is George Wishart, a man of the church, a thinker and reformer.

He died a brutal death in 1546 for his faith and beliefs in St Andrews, Fife and thus helped flame the beginnings of a massive wave of Church reformation which spread through Europe ( www.wishart.org/georgewishart.html ).  His influence in Scotland and England was immense.

The year 2013 was the five hundredth anniversary of his birth, and the Wishart Society felt this should not pass unmarked.  There is a strong body of historians and theologians, and not a few Wishart descendants, who agree that it is an important event.

In conjunction with professors from the main universities of Scotland - and beyond - we arranged a public symposium (talks, exhibitions and conversations) on the life and works of George Wishart, held at the University of St Andrews on August 30th, 2013.  In association with this we are also arranging other events with a wider interest to Wisharts.
